SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The population of visually impaired people is growing here in western Massachusetts. According to the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind, 40,000 men, women and children are legally blind in the four western Massachusetts counties.

Annette Davis Harris of Springfield created a self-help group at the Mayflower Senior Center “Because this made me feel like I’m stronger through my connections with the people I work with. I support them and they support me.”

By sharing information, many of the visually impaired are familiar with the latest technology, such as a device that tells time by speaking out loud when the numbers can’t be seen.
