CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – La Nina was forecast to return this year, but for a time, it didn’t look like it was going to happen.
After a wait, La Nina conditions have finally developed, and according to NOAA, they may last through the winter.
La Nina is the opposite of El Nino. During an El Nino, warm water builds up in the eastern Pacific near the equator. Last year we experienced one of the strongest El Ninos on record. It was blamed for causing destructive weather across the globe.
The latest observations now show colder water in the eastern Pacific, indicating La Nina has developed, but this La Nina is expected to be short-lived.
Typically when a La Nina occurs during the winter, we can expect to experience colder than average temperatures here in the Northeast.
