Warning: New I-91 detour in Springfield will not be quick or easy

There were 10 detour signs along the route

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – On Wednesday and Thursday nights, you will not be able to drive directly from I-291 West to I-91 South.

22News drove down the detoured route on I-91 in Springfield, with a GoPro mounted on the dashboard, and discovered it is long and complicated.

You’ll start by passing the usual Exit 1A, and taking Exit 2Bb instead. Then you’ll make a left, and go through, or get stuck, at about 10 lights; but be careful, there’s already construction on Dwight Street, where you can get stuck waiting to change lanes to avoid it.

Once you get through that, you’ll turn right on to State Street where you’ll hit about 3 more lights. And stay in the middle lane, so you don’t get trapped in the “Turn Only” lane, trying to follow the signs.

Eventually you’ll turn left onto East Columbus Avenue, where, after another series of lights, you can catch I-91 south.

This detour us an extra 9 minutes and 13 seconds, and we spent more than 4 minutes waiting at red lights. The plus side, there were 10 detour signs along the route, so it’s nearly impossible to get lost.

The closure will be in effect on Wednesday and Thursday nights from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Watch the video below (Click Here for Mobile Devices) to see the entire detour route.
