Monson solar farm may violate zoning regulations

The project would involve chopping down 20,000 trees

MONSON, Mass. (WWLP) – Monson’s planning board discussed Tuesday night whether to approve a controversial solar farm project. The 2-megwatt solar farm proposed at 53 Wilbraham Road has received a lot of backlash from residents.

The meeting came one day after a lawyer representing opponents of the project said it would violate zoning regulations.

Chairman of the Monson planning board, Craig Sweitzer, told 22News the project needs to be carefully executed, if approved. He said, “Green energy everybody likes, but again, if it involves issues that could potentially create hardships, we gotta make sure that we do it properly.”

The planning board has 60 days to decide whether or not to approve the solar farm proposal. The project would involve chopping down 20,000 trees.
