Big Y donation drive raises $20,000 for American Red Cross

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The effort to help the victims of Hurricane Matthew is not over.

Big Y supermarkets presented a check for $20,000 to the American Red Cross of Western Massachusetts Tuesday.

The grocery chain hosted a donation drive from October 15th to October 29th. Customers and employees could make donations at any Big Y location in Massachusetts or Connecticut.

Mike Messer, Store Director of Big Y in West Springfield told 22News, “It’s become a regular thing, whenever disaster strikes, people in the community respond and we’re there to lend a hand.”

“We want to thank Big Y, we want to thank the community and let you know we’re out here everyday of the week, 24/7, making sure that people are protected,” said Brandford Campbell, Chapter Chair of the Western Massachusetts Red Cross.

Big Y has a long history of helping support those in need through the American Red Cross.

In their decade long partnership, they’ve raised nearly a half million dollars in support victims of both domestic and international disasters.
