SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Police said they pulled over a driver early Monday who was in possession of an unlicensed gun.
Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney told 22News officers pulled over an SUV after it ran a red light, stopped in the middle of an intersection, and reversed in order to make a right onto Hancock Street.
Delaney said the officers were threatened by the driver, 40-year-old Pedro Rivera, as they asked for his license and registration. When the officers had Rivera step out of the car, they said they found a gun tucked into his pants. Delaney said the officers were able to safely take the gun from Rivera, but that he threatened their lives multiple times.
Rivera was arrested and charged with:
- Carrying a loaded firearm without a license.
- Possession of open container
- Threat to murder
- Firearm violation
- Failure to stop at a red light
Police said Rivera was held overnight and is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Springfield District Court.
