NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – The time limit and cost for parking on Main Street in downtown Northampton have both increased.

The cost per hour to park on Main Street has been increased from 75 cents per hour to $1.00 per hour. But for that additional cost, you will be able to spend more time on shopping, eating, and even getting a haircut in downtown. The time limit for parking on Main Street in downtown Norrthampton was changed from one hour to two hours.

This was the first of several downtown parking changes that came from a Downtown Northampton Parking Management Study. Main Street businesses are hoping the change allows people to spend more time in downtown and shop for longer.

“All of our haircuts run an hour, so the day a stylist is running a few minutes late it’s always inconveniencing people, whether or not I have to run out to feed their meter, or if they have to feed their own meter,” said Sue Kennedy, manager of Salon 241 in Northampton.

Kennedy told 22News that the previous one hour limit also made it difficult to eat lunch or shop in downtown. Mayor Narkewicz recommended this first change to Main Street Parking, which was approved by City Council last week.

By early 2017, Northampton will have upgraded meters and lot kiosks, which that can accept credit and debit card payments. You will also be able to pay with an app on your smartphone.
