(NBC) – A family from Tennessee got some closure this Veterans Day when the remains of their uncle, who died in World War Two, arrived back home.

Waiting for the plane were cousins Betsy Bond and Betty Stites. It was a moment they never expected to see.

73 years ago this month, their uncle, Private First Class Ben Gore was killed in action in the battle of Tarawa. It was a victory for the US Military, but it still left a thousand marines and sailors dead.

Betsy and Betty say this moment was about carrying out their grandparents’ wishes, which means a burial for their uncle, who is now back home on a special veterans day for this family.
