(CNN) – Remember how a bunch of people, even celebrities, pledged to leave the country if Donald Trump was elected president?
Well, a south Alabama mayor is raising money to get everyone who promised to leave, a bus ticket to Mexico.
Now making the rounds on social media, a post by Orange Beach mayor Tony Kennon on his personal Facebook page. He says, “It was sort of tongue in cheek but in reality it’s serious business, I mean, words have meaning.”
He wants everyone who vowed to leave the country if Donald Trump became president to keep their promise, and he has set up a GoFundMe account to help them out. “I want to raise $10 million to buy all the bus tickets we can find to send all the celebrities and athletes who don’t love this country to Tijuana, Mexico, for a better life.”
His account is called “Don’t Let The Screen Door Hit You” and it was born out of frustration over what he calls the hypocrisy of it all. “And the minute things don’t go their way they’re going to take their ball and go home. In this case, take their money and go somewhere else. And I just want to help ‘em, that’s the kind of guy I am. I want to help them get out of town.”
Kennon says what he doesn’t spend on bus tickets, he’ll donate to local charities.
Reaction to the post – well, most are behind him. But some aren’t.
He says, “The responses mean nothing for me, I’m stating and standing for what I believe in and I don’t care what anybody thinks. But for the most part, it has been absolutely positive.”
Folks we spoke with see a bigger lesson in all this.
Bob Magnusen said, “I think that we need to learn to get along together. We’re all in this together. That’s what makes America great.”
Chris Witt said, “It’s a done deal. Just grasp it and try to support it.”
Kennon believes that too, but…”They need to apologize if they are going to stay in our country.”
So far, nearly $500,000 has been donated towards the $10 million goal. Kennon says he hopes the post goes viral.
