(NBC News) Veterans day weekend kicked off Friday with parades and memorials honoring the men and women who have sacrificed so much for our nation and our freedom.
“Whenever you doubt that courage and goodness and selflessness is possible, you stop and look to a veteran,” President Obama told the crowd gathered at Arlington National Cemetery.
The president then tied the day’s purpose to the election held earlier in the week.
“Veteran’s Day often follows a hard-fought political campaign, an exercise in free speech and self-government that you fought for,” Mr. Obama said.. It often lays bare disagreements across our nation. The American instinct has never been to find isolation in opposite corners, it is to find strength in our common creed, forge unity from our great diversity.”
