Expired prescribed medication could do more harm than good

(KTIV) – There’s a good chance you have expired medication in your medicine cabinet. When it comes time to need to reach far back in the cabinet, is it safe to take that expired medication?

Pharmacist Brett Bieber says medical studies haven’t proven one way or the other, however it’s best to not chance it. “Drug effectiveness is probably the first concern we start to worry about loss of potency overtime,” Bieber says.

Bieber said it’s up to the manufacturer to decide what the expiration date should be. It varies prescription to prescription, but it’s usually one year.

He adds it’s not advised to take expired prescribed medication either, because it could do more harm than good.
