SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Donald Trump’s victory Tuesday night proved that in our country’s democratic process, anything can happen.

Some people, like Simi A. of Chicopee told 22News, he started his morning in disbelief. “I was totally shocked, I was in disbelief,” he said.

Other voters, like Donald Orcutt of Chicopee, said he woke up optimistic that a new president could lead a country divided by political parties, in a new direction. “I was happy Donald Trump won. I’m 82 and I have been in this country all of my life. I’ve never seen it so bad,” he said.

Most people didn’t see the results until they woke up Wednesday. That’s when they realized most of the polls, projections, and predictions, were all wrong.

Lucia Demaio of Chicopee told 22News she stayed up late watching the election, and woke up to completely different results. “We were watching them all night, so we shocked, because she was a little bit ahead, and then he was kind of behind when I went to bed. So, when I woke up and saw it, we were shocked,” she said.

Polls taken as early as last week showed Hillary Clinton with a slight lead over Donald Trump, proof that polls can’t always predict the outcome of an election.

No one is 100% sure how the pollsters got their predictions so wrong, but many political analysts will likely spend the next few weeks trying to figure it out.
