Police searching for driver in deadly Amherst crash

AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) –  Police are searching for a suspect who they say crashed their truck into a covered bus stop on North Pleasant Street Sunday.

Northwestern District Attorney Spokeswoman Mary Carey told 22News 55-year-old William Wanczyk of Northampton has died as a result of the crash.

Police said a green truck was seen speeding downtown with no headlights on around 9:30 p.m Sunday, before fish-tailing and hitting the bus stop. The truck was later found abandoned north of the crash site with heavy damage.

Carey said Wancyzk was transported to Cooley Dickinson Hospital where he died shortly after 10:00 p.m.

Amherst Police, Massachusetts State Police, MSP Crime Scene Services, and MSP Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section are investigating the crash.
