SALEM, Mass. (AP) — A veteran officer and husband of Salem’s police chief has been arrested and charged with sexual assault.

The Salem News reports Patrolman Brian Butler was taken into custody Tuesday evening.

A spokeswoman for the Essex District Attorney’s office told the newspaper that Butler faces one count each of rape and indecent assault and battery.

He’s been ordered held on $25,000 bail and is set to be arraigned Wednesday in Salem District Court.

Mayor Kim Driscoll told the paper Butler was placed on paid administrative leave Sunday.

Police Chief Mary Butler did not immediately comment. The newspaper reports she recused herself from the investigation and was not in the office this week.

Brian Butler didn’t immediately comment and it couldn’t be immediately determined if he has a lawyer.
