Paving work wrapping up on Route 9 in Hadley

Project also affecting travel on Route 47

HADLEY, Mass. (WWLP) – Drivers experienced some added time on their commutes on Route 9 in Hadley Tuesday.

Paving work on Route 9 and Route 47 in Hadley started Tuesday morning. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation says that the work is part of the reconstruction project at the intersection of Russell and Middle Streets.

The work has been limited to Route 9 east of the intersection, and a small part of Route 47. It got underway at around 7:00 A.M. and is expected to last until about 4:00 P.M.

Only one lane of traffic is being allowed each way on Route 9, with alternating one-way traffic on Route 47.

“I just wanted to go to the library, so I had to cross the road down there, so I got there anyway, but it’s almost over and I’m happy that it’s going to be over this winter,” Kate Z. of Williamsburg said.

The $3 million reconstruction project on Route 9 has been going on all summer to widen the roadway and replace water lines underneath. The next phase of construction will take place in about five years, from Town Hall to the East Street intersection.
