WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – MassDOT says demolition of the toll plazas is either on schedule or ahead of schedule at 23 work sites along the Massachusetts Turnpike.

Phase 1 is already complete in Westfield at interchange 3. Crews haven’t set up equipment to begin Phase 2 yet, but plan to start before the scheduled thanksgiving date. Phase 2 focuses on demolishing the remaining toll booths on the outside lanes.

Traffic has already been pushed to the center lanes at the Westfield exit in preparation. Westfield resident Patrick Mullen told 22News that the placement of the jersey barriers could be problematic.

Mullen said, “My biggest concern is they better straighten it out. It’s not wide enough. There’s going to be a lot of accidents there in the winter, I bet.”

Tunnel demolition under the tolls in Westfield has already finished. MassDOT expects all tolling demolition to be complete by the end of 2017.
