Easthampton Police establish new safe zone for internet purchases

The area is marked with a sign, "Internet Purchase Exchange Location."

EASTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – The Easthampton Police Department has established an ‘Internet Purchase Exchange Location’ for buyers and sellers of online items to meet safely when completing transactions.

The area is located in the public parking lot of the Easthampton Public Safety Complex at 32 Payson Ave. Police said the area is monitored by surveillance and is in place to alleviate the need for people to meet with strangers at private homes or unfamiliar places.

“We saw a need to do something like this for signs because of the age that we live in. With all the transactions especially like Craigslist and eBay. We wanted to have a safe place for people to come exchange items that they may purchase. So we thought it would be a good idea,” said Easthampton Police Detective Mark Popielarczyk.

Other communities across western Massachusetts have also established these safe zones. Each area is designated by a sign that reads, “Internet Purchase Exchange Location, This area is under video surveillance.” Locations include:

  • Belchertown – 70 State Street. Located in the front parking lot of the Belchertown Police Department.
  • Deerfield – 8 Conway Street. Located in the parking lot of the Deerfield Police Department.
  • Chicopee – 110 Church Street. Located in the parking lot of the Chicopee Police Department.
  • Hadley – 15 East Street. Located in the parking lot of the Hadley Police Department.

If you are going to be making some holiday purchases online, police advise you do as much research as you can before you meet in person.
