The cities became sister cities more than 20 years ago.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Mayor Domenic Sarno played host to the students from Takikawa High School as part of a cultural exchange program. In addition to receiving gifts from Mayor Sarno, the visitors from Takikawa toured Springfield College, the Basketball Hall of Fame and the Museum of Springfield History.

Takikawa is Springfield’s sister city in Japan. Springfield High School students have also visited their counterparts in Japan.

Coincidentally, the supervisor for the visiting students, Yas Yamauchi, used to teach Japanese in Springfield. “This is a great chance to know about other countries,” he said. “It can open up their minds and hearts to the world.”

The visit to Springfield will hopefully leave a lasting impression on the visiting high school students.
