What every jogger needs to know about self-defense

Jiu-Jitsu is a type of martial arts specializing in self-defense

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Local runners are on high alert after hearing several disturbing stories about women across the country being attacked while they were on a run.

Being aware of one’s surroundings can be difficult while running, making joggers easier targets for attackers.

Women are watching their backs, saying they never run alone and pay attention to what’s around them wherever they go.

Even in parks that seem safe and secluded, like Mill Creek and Buhl, there is always the risk that someone could be hiding or something could happen. However, there are skills people can learn to protect themselves against an attacker.

“I’ll take you here to a self-defense class to show you a couple moves that could get you out of a sticky situation,” said Jim Bundy, owner of Bundy Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.

Jiu-Jitsu is a type of martial arts specializing in self-defense. Certain moves can help a person escape if they’re grabbed from the waist or from behind.

Bundy says the point of the self-defense moves is to take the attacker down without using up too much energy.

“What are you going to do when you’re nervous? You’re going to burn energy and as soon as you start burning all of that energy up, which isn’t going to take that long, you’re going to be exhausted,” he said. “The goal is to conserve energy and try to force the opponent to actually use his energy.”

Moves like punches and kicks should be avoided because an attacker who’s bigger could block them and gain control.
