TURNERS FALLS, Mass (WWLP) – Turners Falls residents are divided on whether they should change their high school nickname – the Indians.
The school committee held a meeting on Tuesday, and this was one item on the agenda. That’s where a Montague man proposed a town-wide referendum, which would ask the opinions of residents.
But Superintendent of Schools Michael Sullivan told 22News the school committee will not pursue it as an option. They instead plan to hold a series of meetings that will begin at the end of November. The meetings will include perspectives from local historians, archaeologists, UMass professors and Native Americans.
Jeffrey Taylor of Turners Falls told 22News, “It’s just dragged out there’s no reason for it. We’ve been the Indians since the high school has been here. Either you make your mind up and change it, or you don’t change it.”
Sullivan told 22News the school committee is looking for a decision to be made before May, before the next school committee is elected.
The school committee will be holding a public forum on November 15th on the high school nickname.
