SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – An Iraq war veteran and Springfield Firefighter has been named Springfield’s Veteran of the Year. Eric Rosa was given the award on Wednesday during an afternoon ceremony at Springfield City Hall.

The Award is given on an annual basis to a Springfield veteran who volunteers their time. Rosa is also the owner, instructor and coach at Virtue Martial Arts and Fitness in Springfield.

Rosa told 22News that it’s a rewarding way to give back to his community. “We’re finding that through the training, its actually helping them in school,” he said. “It’s helping them out of school, it’s helping them at home and they look forward to coming to the gym and learning more.”

Springfield’s Veterans Services Department also announced that Hampden County District Attorney Anthony Gulluni will serve as the 2016 Veterans Day Parade Marshall.
