PALMER, Mass. (WWLP) – You’ve called and sent 22News emails complaining the last few nights about big traffic delays off the Massachusetts Turnpike in Palmer. The MassDOT told 22News they’ve received these same complaints and are working to make some adjustments.
Over the last 4 days, as MassDOT crews have been demolishing toll booths and canopies, viewers told 22News the biggest traffic jams were at Exit 8 in Palmer.
Katie Jollimore’s husband got stuck on Monday, when construction crews were removing toll booths and canopies; “He cut in front of people to get off the exit sooner. Other than that, he said it would take 30 minutes, 45 minutes to get home.”
Since then, traffic’s improved at Exit 8. MassDOT spokesman Patrick Marvin told 22News besides construction and the 15 mph speed limit, what’s slowing you down is the traffic signal at the end of the ramp.
MassDOT said Exit 8 is one of a few locations across the entire state that have had the most traffic build ups around the construction. Because of it, they said they’re sending traffic engineers there to find a solution. Engineers will evaluate the construction site on Thursday to possibly make adjustments to ease traffic flow.
Drivers, and even Facebook posters, suggested making the traffic signal hold a green light longer. “Can’t really make it any wider,” said Robert Williams of Palmer. “The light’s there with the intersection, so I don’t think there’s anything else you can do, except get off somewhere else.”
Marvin couldn’t specify what time the traffic engineers will be at Exit 8 on Thursday.
