CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – The 28 local volunteer firefighters that graduated from a state training program, Wednesday night, represent 19 fire departments, including Amherst, East Longmeadow, Palmer, Lee and South Hadley.
The Call/Volunteer Recruit Firefighter Program trains young men and women on nights and weekends to accommodate the schedule of firefighters in rural areas.
One recent graduate, Wyatt Marshall of Westhampton, told 22News he is grateful to join the ranks of firefighters who have devoted their lives to be public service.
“I mean there’s a lot of pride and joy when it comes to the fire service. Seeing all these retired and career freighters, chiefs…it feels good. It feels good to be around all these people,” said Marshall.
All graduates must complete 240 hours of training and pass a final exam.
