How to spot weak trees that need to be taken down

Last weeks snow toppled trees and branches

EAST LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WWLP) – You probably remember our first taste of snow last week. You might also remember it brought down trees and branches.

The wet snow piled onto the leaves, causing trees to fall onto the roadways, even on homes across western Massachusetts. Some trees and branches brought down power lines, plunging thousands of homes into darkness across the region. That’s why it’s important to have any weak trees taken down before winter’s worst.

“Nobody wants to pay for tree work or tree removal but being proactive can save thousands of dollars. It can save lives,” said Joe Alexopolous, the President of Tree413. He said it costs about $1,000 to remove the average tree.

So, how can you tell if your tree needs to come down? “Look to see if there’s any splits or cracks. Another good thing to look at, cavities or dead branches on the trees. If there’s any dead branches that says a lot about what’s going on inside,” Alexopolous told 22News.

Eversource Energy will also remove branches or limbs in direct contact with their wires, for free. You can contact them at 1-800-880-2433.
