SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A 34 year-old Springfield resident is being charged with murder in the shooting death of a Florida resident Sunday morning.

According to Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney, Rafael Martinez of 30 Jardine Street is accused of killing Eddie Olivio, 36, of Kissimmee, Florida in a shooting near Martinez’s house.

Delaney says that police were called to 30 Jardine Street at around 10:30 Sunday morning, on a report of shots fired. Once there, officers found Olivo inside a Saab sedan, suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken to Baystate Medical Center, where he died about 30 minutes later.

Delaney says that police found a possible suspect right away, and after talking with witnesses and gathering evidence, Martinez was arrested at around 1:00 P.M.

The shooting was not a random act, Delaney says, but at this time, they are not disclosing the suspected motive. They are also not releasing Martinez’s booking photo at this time.

Delaney says that police recovered two handguns at the crime scene, and Martinez faces additional charges of carrying a loaded firearm, possession of ammunition, and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling.
