INDIA (WWLP) – On Sunday, Hindus throughout India began the annual celebration of Diwali, the Festival of Lights.

The five-day festival marks the triumph of truth over ignorance and light over darkness.

It’s one of the most important and popular Hindu festivals, celebrated with temples decorated with lamps. People celebrate by watching fireworks and lighting small lamps called Diyas.

People also offered prayers to the Hindu goddess of wealth, Laxmi.

French tourist Sujel told 22News, “I think it’s really great thing (Diwali) that is happening in India, I guess it’s like Christmas for us. So I can feel the joy and nice period from everybody here, so it’s really great.”

The word Diwali (dee-wall-ee) is translated as “a row of lamps.”
