(NBC News) – Health tracking technology is evolving from wearable to edible.

Proteus Digital Health is now marketing a tiny digital sensor that can be embedded in a pill and swallowed. It’s designed to help PHYSICIANS know if patients are taking their medication properly.

The sensor is safe to consume and is FDA approved. It’s activated by acid in the stomach and sends a heartbeat-like signal to an adhesive bandage on the patient.

“That bandage is recording your rest and your activity, and your heartrate, and it’s also listening for the identifier of the pills you’ve taken,” explains Proteus co-founder Dr. George Savage.

A Bluetooth connection with the patient’s smartphone collects the data from the bandage and encrypts it. It can then be shared with the physician or kept private.

Select medical centers are using the sensors with medications such as ones for hypertension, but expansion is on the horizon.
