CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – The snow we had on Thursday is pretty unusual, but does happen this time of year from time to time.
The danger of having snow this early in the season is that it is heavy, and wet, and can make for very slippery roads.
Also, with our foliage running behind this year, a lot of the leaves are on the trees still, and when the heavy wet snow accumulates on those trees limbs, some tress can come down causing power outages. We saw that 5 years ago on October 29, 2011 during the big October snowstorms that knocked out power for days.
The snow was slow to change in parts of the area because cold air got trapped in the valley. There also wasn’t much wind that would have helped the warmer air to our south and east move in and change that snow over to rain a little quicker.
The good news is that snow is over, and temperatures have been warming up causing the snow to melt.
Roads are in good shape, but there could still be some snow on some side street and parking lots in western Hampden, Hampshire and Franklin Counties, so you might want to give yourself a little extra time.
