SUNDERLAND, Mass. (WWLP) –Two local police departments say the traffic lights are to blame for a 5-car accident in Franklin County. Deerfield and Sunderland police responded to the accident Wednesday morning near a well-traveled intersection. Two people were taken to Baystate Franklin Medical Center after that crash Wednesday. Three of the five vehicles involved had major damage.
The accident took place on the bridge between Sunderland and Deerfield on Route 116, less than a mile away from the traffic light where 116 intersects with Route 47 in Sunderland. Police said the traffic light there takes too long to change, causing major backups, and accidents.
Both Deerfield and Sunderland Police said they’ve contacted MassDOT to make improvements. Sunderland Police Chief Erik Demetropoulos told 22News “We are going to to wait for whatever plan they set up. Hopefully they will change something within the lights to allow some free flow of traffic, but until then we will hold our breath and wait.”
Chief Demetropoulous told 22News traffic is at the heaviest during the morning and afternoon commute times. Drivers are advised to use caution in the area.
