(CNN) – Edward Busses is no stranger to Sentara Leigh. This was his sixth knee surgery. Two days after and he’s smiling and, he’s at ease, he says.
He’s talking about the cotton blanket he’s using. Just one, infused with copper. A new study released Wednesday from Sentara Healthcare shows copper infused bedding, towels, tray tables, gowns even sinks can reduce hospital acquired infections by as much as 83-percent.
Researchers compared an old wing at Sentara Leigh without copper products to a new wing with copper products. They say the copper proved so successful to patient’s health, they are now putting the metal in every patient room in all twelve of its local hospitals with the help of two companies: Cupron Inc. and Norfolk based EOS surfaces.
A potential game-changer for hospital across the country, happening in our backyard. The study took one year to complete and there is a second study in the works, researchers are expecting the same results from the study to further solidify their findings and change the future of health-care.
