A new blend of home heating oil

In two years, the biofuel will be mandated by the state

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (WWLP) – Thursday’s weather makes it official. Home heating season is here, and Thursday, a local fuel company helped its customers and the environment with a new blend of home heating oil.

Fuel Services of South Hadley serves about 10,000 customers. Those customers will now be delivered their B-5 ultra clean oil. It’s a blend of ultra-low sulfur oil, 5% biofuel and an additive to prevent corrosion.

In two years, the biofuel will be mandated by the state, but Fuel Services wanted to start now and they won’t be charging their customers any extra.

Joshua Nolan, VP, Sales & Marketing, Fuel Services told 22News, “You can technically make bio fuel out of a variety of products. You can make it out of palm oil, you can make it out of corn. That’s how you get ethanol. A bio product is simply a biodegradable source which is normally food scraps that is extracted into a fuel source. What we use is soybean oil.”

Nolan told 22News the new biofuel blend burns hotter, cleaner, gives off less emissions, and requires less maintenance from the homeowner. Its American made, so it lessens dependence on foreign oil and it’s blended on-site at the facility in South Hadley.
