Man died after being hit by freight train in Athol

Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death

ATHOL, Mass. (WWLP) – Local, state and railroad police were investigating a freight train accident in Athol, Tuesday morning, after a man was killed on the tracks.

According to Mary Carey of the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, around 10:50 a.m. Tuesday, Pan Am Railroad Dispatch informed Winchendon Dispatch about a man who appeared to have been hit by a freight train in Athol.

State Trooper Paul Sullivan told 22News the accident happened on the tracks near the Royalston town line.

Carey said Athol and Royalston Police and Fire Departments, State Police assigned to the Athol Barracks, Railroad Police and MSP assigned to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office were all called in to help with the investigation.

The Chief Medical Examiner will determine the official cause of death.
