CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Get ready for cooler air heading in for the rest of week. 22News is tracking why this air is being reinforced into our area.

October is a month where we can see a mix bag of weather. If temperatures are warm, most likely we’ll be seeing rain. But if temperatures are colder we have a chance for snow or even a wintry mix, which includes sleet or freezing rain. Take the Halloween Snowstorm of 2011 for example temperatures were cold enough for snow that year. Average snowfall for October in western Massachusetts is tenth of an inch.

Average high temperature for October is in the upper 50s, but as we head into the end of this week temperatures will be going down into the 40s, a good ten to even fifteen degree difference. This is all thanks to the jet stream, a narrow, fast moving band of air currents up in the atmosphere that helps controls our weather patterns. As the jet stream takes as dip below New England that will filter in some much cooler air. Which is what we will be experiencing as we finish the month of October.
