WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Members of West Springfield’s First Baptist church shared twin milestones with their longtime pastor this weekend.
This is the 140th anniversary of the church, which was founded in 1876.
This weekend also marked the 35th anniversary of Robert Smith’s tenure as pastor of this Baptist church. Both milestones were observed during a Saturday banquet and Sunday service.
Pastor Smith told 22News he’s looking towards the future, saying, “We now do some intentional outreach to high school students, meet Thursday nights. My dad was a fire chaplain, I’m a fire chaplain with the fire department here.”
One member of the congregation, Mark Mitchell, told 22News, “We were looking for a place that was family oriented and felt warm and as I walked in the door, met Bob, I knew this is where I want to do my church service.”
First Baptist has had several homes during its 140 year history. It’s current building on piper road dates back to 1970.
