HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – Most of us know that Springfield is the birthplace of basketball, but Holyoke is where Volleyball was invented. Home to the International Volleyball Hall of Fame, the sport has evolved over the years to become an international sport represented in the Olympic Games.
Saturday, 4 players and 1 coach were given the sports highest honor, being inducted into the Hall of Fame. The class of enshrinees included two Americans, including Misty May-Treanor.
She’s won 3 Olympic gold medals in beach volleyball playing alongside Kerry Walsh Jennings. 22News asked her what this honor means to her.
May-Treanor said, “It’s truly an honor, all the greats who have ever been around our sport are on that wall here in Holyoke and I will be amongst them now.
The other American is Danielle Scott, who earned two Olympic silver medals for indoor volleyball.
A total of 130 athletes have been inducted into the Volleyball Hall of Fame.
