SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Springfield Thunderbirds just wrapped up their first home game of the year.
The Thunderbirds got the result they wanted on Saturday, and they sure had the support out there when they took the ice in the Mass Mutual Center for the first time.
It was a packed house Saturday night for the Thunderbirds home opener, as fans had their first look at Springfield’s new hockey team.
Brett Bohl from Ludlow told 22News, “I grew up playing in this arena. It’s great to see hockey still here.”
The Thunderbirds came into their game 2-1 after all three games on the road.
Justin Alejandro from Springfield told 22News, “This is a great start. It seems that they’ve done a really great job throughout the summer with the conversion of the new team and engaging the community. We’re hoping for more wins, we’re hoping they’ll have a successful season, and make a run at the Calder Cup.”
The next game for the Thunderbirds will be next Friday also at home when they take on the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
