Mass. teen abducted, sexually assaulted while walking to school

The suspect took the 13-year-old for two hours

LAWRENCE, Mass. (CNN/WCVB) – Police arrested the suspect in a sexual assault on a 13-year-old student in Massachusetts. They say Angel Mateo abducted and assaulted the teen, who was walking to school in Lawrence Thursday morning.

Lights on Thursday night at the second floor apartment of 76 Phillips Street in Lawrence. This is where police say the 21-year old took the victim and sexually assaulted the teenager for two hours.

Lawrence Police Capt. Scott McNamara said, “The victim reports being forcibly dragged from the street into a second floor apartment.” That student had been walking to South Lawrence East Middle School, and almost made it; the house on Phillips Street is only about a 5 minute walk from the school.

After Mateo let the victim go, the teen walked to school and called their mom, who then called authorities. Police say the teen is extremely brave, providing enough details to lead them straight to Mateo. He was already on pre-trial probation with an ankle bracelet, but was not a prior sex offender.

Lawrence Mayor Dan Rivera said, “I think to be safe and for abundance of caution, I’m going to ask all police departments to gather list of everyone in our community within the city limits on ankle bracelet. We will review the list and see what level of threat our police department thinks they are.”

Mateo has been charged with kidnapping and aggravated statutory rape.
