Suspects allegedly attempted to throw gun into the Connecticut River

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – There was a police chase Thursday night in downtown Springfield. Several police cruisers were seen chasing a car down Interstate 91, near the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney told 22News the department received a report of an assault with a handgun on Woodlawn Street around 9:30 p.m. Thursday. He said when officers arrived, they did not see a victim but did see a Chrysler 200 speeding away from the area.

Police chased the Chrysler through downtown, to the North End, and then over the South End Bridge; that’s where officers allegedly saw the passenger in the car attempted to throw a gun out the window, into the Connecticut River, Sgt Delaney said. Police were able to recover the alleged gun.

Sgt. Delaney said the two suspects in the car were eventually arrested in Enfield, Connecticut, off Exit 48. He said the suspects will face firearm and failing to stop for police charges.

Springfield Police also received some assistance from Agawam Police Thursday night. Sgt. Dan Bonafilia told 22News officers were stationed near the Agawam rotary area. He said the car got off on the rotary to try and evade police but then hopped on the highway.
