SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A once-popular Halloween costume seems to be falling out of favor due to recent news events.
Geri Spear of the Costume Closet in Springfield told 22News that she has been in the costume rental business for 42 years, and this is the slowest year ever for clowns. She hasn’t rented a single clown costume to the adult party crowd.
Spear attributed this largely to the “scary clown” craze that has been sweeping the country.
“Even a lot of haunted houses are eliminating their scary clowns, the children are frightened of them, and unfortunately, it’s affected the clowns and their business very much. It’s a sad thing,” Spear said.
But while some news may make one kind of costume less popular, it can also make other types of costumes more popular. Spear said that the most popular mask they have been renting out this year has been the gorilla mask. The killing of Harambe the gorilla at the Cincinnati Zoo has made the gorilla a popular topical costume across the country.
Not tied to news events, however, is what Spear says is one of the most popular couples costumes this year: Mark Antony and Cleopatra.
