WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Bear sightings continue in residential neighborhoods in western Massachusetts. 22News viewer Mike Sonsin sent us a video of a black bear passing through his yard on Birnie Avenue in West Springfield two weeks ago.
Over this past weekend, residents on Spruce Circle in Westfield spotted an apparently wounded bear in their neighborhood.
Black bears are indigenous to western Massachusetts, and although sightings in residential neighborhoods are fairly rare, they are not entirely uncommon. If you want to keep bears away, the Massachusetts Department of Energy and Environmental Affairs advises that you avoid putting out bird feeders, always secure your trash, and do not feed your pets outside.
