SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Springfield City Council approved plans for signage submitted by MGM Springfield at a meeting on Monday night. The City Council unanimously approved MGM’s plan to put six additional signs on top of its seven-story parking garage.

Under the plan, five illuminated signs would face the highway while the sixth would face a different direction. The casino hopes to reach thousands of drivers each day with these signs.

“I don’t think it’s distracting,” Westfield resident John Richards said. “It’s good advertising for the casinos. You’re supposed to keep your mind on the road anyway. So i don’t think its distracting. You got to look at the bottom line: it’s gonna help the city of Springfield out a lot, so I think it’s worth it in the long run”

MGM Springfield doesn’t have a permit for the signs yet. They have to conduct a study that will look at the impact the signs could have on traffic flow and safety on I-91.
