Jose "Joselito" Rodriguez was killed in weekend shooting

This memorial to Jose "Joselito" Rodriguez has been set up near the Southpoint Apartments in Amherst. Rodriguez died after being shot multiple times in an incident at the apartment complex.

AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) – Two men were shot at the Southpoint Apartments in Amherst just after midnight on Saturday. One of the men 31-year-old Jose “Joselito” Rodriguez died.

Eneysha Diaz of Amherst said, “It’s just sad that they had to take his life away like this for no reason because you know Amherst is not about violence, gun violence, none of that.”

Neighbors woke up that Saturday morning to find the apartment at 266 East Hadley Road blocked off with police tape.  The Northwestern District Attorney Spokeswoman Mary Carey told 22News Rodriguez had been staying at the apartments.

The 28-year-old man who was also shot several times is still being treated at UMass Medical Center in Worcester.

One dead in early morning shooting in Amherst

Friends and family continued to gather near a memorial for Rodriguez Monday, some while on their lunch breaks from work. Anjali Khamma said, “After seeing this happening, just seeing how many people came out. There’s just a lot of people that loved him.”

Cuong Ly told 22News he was a friend of Rodriguez since he moved to Amherst about 15 years ago and that they would go fishing together at Puffer’s Pond, “He was like the life of the party, always a great person.”

Tyrus Stinson said he grew up with Rodriguez and they would play pick up basketball, “Remembering going to arcades with him, when we was little stuff like that, just running around, basketball, like one of my closest friends. Like really just miss him.” Stinson said Rodriguez left behind three young children.

Police do not believe the shooting was random and say the public is not in any danger and say no arrests have been made yet.
