Another year to go for the I-91 rehabilitation project

Within the next couple months, stage 2 of the project will begin

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – It may have been over a year but still drivers face constant delays during busy hours on I-91 in downtown Springfield.

The project is currently in stage 1B which included the shifting of lanes so crews can replace the deck. Within the next couple months, stage 2 will begin. During that phase the on- and off-ramps that were closed in Stage 1B will remain closed during Stage 2.

I-91 northbound and southbound traffic will shift onto the center, newly reconstructed lanes. Over a year in and some drivers have had enough.

Denise Perrealt of Chicopee said, “I just avoid 91 at all cost I’ll just avoid it I-91. I know that sometimes I know sometimes I’ll use I-91 north and there’s usually not traffic but anytime a day 91 south is full of traffic so I’ll go around anyway I can.”

Also during stage 2, the Exit 9 off-ramp from I-91 North to Route 20 will be closed for the first part of Stage 2 when traffic is initially shifted to the center of the viaduct.

Access from I-91 northbound to I-291 east will remain open with the exception of overnight closures.
