Two people were shot, and one is dead Saturday morning at the Southpoint Apartment complex

AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) –  Police say two people were shot early Saturday morning in Amherst.

Northwestern District Attorney spokeswoman Mary Carey told 22News one man is dead and another hospitalized. The remaining victim of the shooting is being treated UMass Medical Center in Worcester.

Police believe this was an intentional act of violence, and that members of the public are not at risk. Amherst Police and Massachusetts State Police are investigating.

Sgt. Brian Johnson told 22News that two people were shot Saturday morning at the Southpoint Apartment complex at 266 East Hadley Road.

Amherst police were first sent to the apartment complex where shots were fired just after midnight.

When our 22News crews got there, police were taping off the area and looking for evidence.

Nicole Melton, an Amherst resident, said: “I just came out to walk the dogs this morning and then saw this police tape and german shepherds looking for something…that’s a little disconcerting when you wake up.”
