1 arrested, 3 hurt in Springfield road rage stabbing

An argument escalated between a driver and a pedestrian on State Street

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Mercy Medical Center’s emergency room was locked down for about two hours Friday night after a road rage incident on State Street Friday night.

Springfield Police Sgt. Vincent Spagnolo said the incident was “still being sorted out,” but it appeared an argument escalated between a driver and a pedestrian near the intersection of State and Andrew Streets at 5:15 p.m. Friday.

“At least one person was stabbed or slashed, but three were hurt,” Spagnolo said. He did not know the extent of the wounds.

Police officers were at Mercy Medical Center where several people were being treated for unspecified wounds. Spagnolo said he believed it was the driver who used a knife during the incident.

A nurse arriving for her shift at Mercy told 22News that the E.R. had been locked down because some gang members were receiving medical treatment.

The lock down was lifted just after 8:30 p.m.
