Veterans and volunteers make improvements to local war memorial

Improvements expected to be finished in time for Veterans Day

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – West Springfield’s iconic war memorial on the town green is getting an upgrade. West Springfield veterans and volunteers from Home Depot worked all day to improve the site and replacing half a dozen flag poles.

Veteran services Director Chris Lizotte told 22News that these are the first improvements since the war memorial was built 66 years ago. He described the project as a way “to showcase how we honor and care for our veterans. Being able to to this today is an absolute honor.”

Lizotte is a veteran of the war in Iraq. He said the improvements will be ready when the public gathers at the monument on Veterans Day in November.
