Police: Suspect attempted to break into Springfield gas station

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – An Agawam man was allegedly caught by Springfield Police attempting to break into the Racing Mart, early Monday morning, on Main Street in Indian Orchard.

According to Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney, around 3:00 a.m. Monday, Officer Angel Perez was on patrol when he saw a man kneeling down in front of the Racing Mart at 363 Main Street, and attempting to open the front door window with crowbars and a hammer.

When the suspect, later identified as 55-year-old John J. O’Neal, spotted Officer Perez, he dropped the tools and started to run, Sgt. Delaney said. O’Neal was eventually caught and arrested on Beaudry Street.

Sgt. Delaney said O’Neal was wearing gloves and a mask, and his alleged getaway car was found running near Main Street.

O’Neal was charged with the following:

  • Breaking & Entering Building Nighttime for a Felony
  • Destruction of Property
  • Possession of burglarious Instruments

Investigators also determined that O’Neil is suspected in similar breaking and entering’s in West Springfield, Agawam, Suffield, CT. and Enfield, Ct., Sgt. Delaney said. O’Neil was held on high bail.
