(NBC News) House Speaker Paul Ryan is the latest Republican leader to distance himself from Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.
Ryan said Monday he’ll no longer defend Trump, or campaign for him, but will instead focus his efforts on retaining Republican control of Congress.
Trump tweeted a response stating: “Ryan should fight illegal immigration, not the Republican nominee”.
The latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll finds Hillary Clinton nearly doubled her lead over Trump after voters heard his vulgar comments recorded by an Access Hollywood microphone in 2005.
Despite intense focus on the tape, Trump was combative in Sunday’s debate, denying he abused women and threatening he’d use his power as president to jail Clinton for her handling of classified emails.
