Fall’s herbal allergy remedies

CHICOPEE, Mass. (Mass Appeal)  Are you sneezing, scratching and coughing?  Herbal Information Specialist Jonathan Evans, from The Herbarium in Chicopee showed us some herbal remedies for fall allergies.

  • Turmeric: a great anti-inflammatory MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) Sulfur compound that works as an anti-inflammatory, helps soften cells walls and allows allergens to be moved out of the cell.
  • Mullein leaf: reduces inflammation and soothes the throat and cough.
  • Butterbur: Blocks chemicals that cause swelling in the nasal passages.
  • Quercetin: A bioflavonoid that blocks the release of histamine that causes inflammation.
  • Bromelain: From pineapple. Works with quercetin, anti-inflammatory, thins mucous.
  • Vitamin C: Alone or with bromelain and quercetin, a great anti-inflammatory, thins mucous, strengthens cell walls.
  • Stinging nettle: Natural antihistamine.
  • Neti pot: used to flush allergens and pollen from the nasal passages.
  • Honey: Raw, local honey is best. Because the honey contains small amounts of the pollens, it acts to help build up resistance to or reduce your reaction to the pollen.
  • Probiotics: Help normalize your immune system and response.
  • Steams: Old fashioned way to soothe the nasal passages and sinuses. Using garlic, or essential oils.
  • Homeopathic remedies: for those who may be on many medications and are concerned with interactions, there are specially formulated remedies for this area.
