VFW National Day to Change Direction creates awareness for mental health disorders

22 veterans commit suicide every day

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (WWLP) – The VFW National Day to Change Direction is hoping to promote meaningful conversations about mental health and teach people the 5 signs of mental health distress. 22 veterans commit suicide every day and it is reported that 1 in 5 live with mental illness. The goal of National Day to Change Direction is to try and combat the devastating suicide and mental illness statistic.

VFW posts nationwide are responding with community awareness events to help educate the general public. Saturday’s event will feature an instructional video as well as group discussions with local community partners. This event promotes discussion and creates dialogue in regards to mental health, emotional suffering, and access to care.

This event, like many others across the country, hopes to change the culture of mental health in America, with particular focus being given to the veteran community.
